Samsung has showcased a flexible smartphone prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
To create the bendable screen, which the firm has named ‘Youm’, Samsung covered a thin piece of plastic with a layer of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).
"Our team was able to make a high-resolution display on extremely thin plastic instead of glass. So it won’t break even if it’s dropped and we can actually bend the screen," says Brian Berkeley, senior vice president at Samsung.
Samsung has been working on this bendable display technology for a while and even unveiled a prototype at last year’s CES. Analyst say that the technology is now only a few years away from appearing in consumer electronic devices.
