Nvidia finally unveiled its GeForce GTX 1080 graphic card over the weekend – the first gaming GPU based on the company’s new Pascal architecture.
Providing up to two times more performance in virtual reality compared to the GeForce GTX Titan X, the 1080 is the most powerful gaming GPU ever built.
During the launch event, Nvidia demonstrated the graphics card running Doom with the Vulkan API.
The demonstration shows the GTX 1080 running at up to 200 fps on Ultra settings.
"The PC is the world’s favourite gaming platform, and our new Pascal GPU architecture will take it to new heights," said Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of Nvidia’s PC business.
"Our first Pascal gaming GPU, the GeForce GTX 1080, enables incredible realism in gaming and deeply immersive VR experiences, with dramatically improved performance and efficiency. It’s the most powerful gaming GPU ever built, and some of our finest work."
Specs for the GeForce GTX 1080 include 9 tflops, 8GB G5X and an MSRP of $599. There will also be an ‘Nvidia Founders Edition’ costing $699. The GPU will be available from May 27th. There is also a GTX 1070 GPU, which will cost $379.
“Pascal was designed to bring out the best in this new generation of content. Its greater memory bandwidth and power efficiency let the GTX 1080 run at clock speeds never before possible — more than 1700 MHz — while consuming just 180 watts of power,” reads the Nvidia blog.
“Our Pascal-based GPUs feature enhanced asynchronous compute, and are the first to harness the power of 8GB of Micron’s new GDDR5X memory. The GTX 1080 is the first gaming GPUs designed for the 16nm FinFET process.”
