Players will be able to scan in codes from the toys to access more virtual characters

VIDEO: LEGO Minifigures Online game for PC due 2014

LEGO Minifigures Online will bring the popular toys to life when it hits PC, iOS and Android platforms next year.

Users will be able to collect and play as tons of different minifigure characters in the game, and unlock more by uploading codes that will come with new versions of the physical toys. Characters include The Ice Skater, the Chicken Suit Guy, the Roller Derby Girl, The Policeman and more.

LEGO Minifigures Online will have a variety of locations including Pirate World, Space World and Medieval World. Players will be able to team up with friends online to develop abilities and level up as they smash, build and collect bricks.

It’s being developed by Funcom and will arrive in the second half of 2014. It’s not (yet) a console game so won’t be a direct competitor with Skylanders and Disney Infinity, but certainly shares a similar ‘toys to life’ gameplay style.

"We could not be more excited to be working with LEGO on such a great franchise. I think you could even say the team has been training to make this game since we were little kids," said Lawrence Poe, Executive Producer of LEGO Minifigures Online.

"That excitement carries over into everything we do, and we’re throwing every ounce of our passion and creativity into the game. We are one hundred percent focused on delivering the fun, safe, quality experience that people expect when they think of LEGO minifigures."

LEGO Minifigures Online will be available as a DirectX 11 PC client and a browser game, using new technology being developed by Funcom for its DreamWorld platform.

The LEGO Minifigure is one of the world’s most popular toys. Since 1975, LEGO has made more than 3,600 different minifigure characters – and a whopping four billion units to date.
