Chipmaker VIA announced the new VIA QuadCore processor which the firm claims will be the world's lowest power quad core x86 processor for mainstream PCs and notebooks.
The VIA QuadCore would have a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of just 27.5W and run at 1.2GHz which made it 21 per cent more energy efficient than the nearest competitor, VIA claimed.
"As a result of the rapid proliferation of high definition multimedia content and increasingly demanding multithreaded applications, a four core processor is the new baseline for today's mainstream PC user," said VIA processor chief Epan Wu.
The new processor will combine four 'Isaiah' cores on two dies and is natively 64-bit compatible, The QuadCore will also include performance enhancing Adaptive Overclocking, 4MB L2 cache and a 1333MHz bus.
The VIA QuadCore is also fully pin-to-pin compatible with the firm's previous VIA Eden, VIA C7 and VIA Nano and Eden X2 processors.
VIA said volume shipments would begin in the third quarter.
