Following Sainsbury's announcement that it will carry a Medion notebook, Tesco is stepping into the line of direct competition with a multimedia Medion desktop carrying Windows Vista home premium and an Intel VIIV Core 2 Duo for £549, in its larger stores. Impressively, the budget PC will feature 2GB memory and a 500GB SATA hard disk.
Similarly, Asda is carrying a series of home PCs from Apple, Sony, IBM, Acer, Fujitsu Siemens and Elonex (?), many of which are at budget prices. The Asda PC range extends from a budget £265 to £1,800 for professional use models.
While this increased activity is likely to further erode prices and commoditise PCs, it will doubtless lead to even more business for the burgeoning PC service and repairs industry.
