UK retail sales for October saw the market climb at its fastest pace since Easter, recording the best performance in October for seven years, analysts say.
According to the British Retail Consortium, UK retail sales values climbed 3.8 per cent last month when compared to October 2008.
“On a total basis, UK sales rose 5.9% against a 0.1% decline in October 2008,” read the report.
And while food and clothing sales failed to build momentum, it was the non-food sales that stimulated the market, at least online.
The growth in non-food sales outside of stores revealed an 18 per cent rise in October, up from a 11.9 per cent rise the month prior.
However, BRC director general Stephen Robertson brought the striking figures down to earth.
“These are encouraging results,” he said, “[but] they are, however, compared to dreadful figures last year.
