Research by the TV watchdog Ofcom has found that internet usage among UK residents continues to grow, but with a greater emphasis on security than ever before.
The bi-annual report found that 38 per cent of UK users now have a social networking profile, an increase from 22 per cent in 2007.
However, people are more aware of the dangers of making personal information publicly available, with three quarters of social network profiles only available to be seen by friends and family, compared to 48 per cent two years ago.
The report also found that while internet shopping and banking has increased in popularity, 21 per cent of respondents said they would never enter their credit card details online, while a further 23 per cent stated that they would never enter their mobile phone number.
Another finding from the research was that a third of UK adults now stream or download TV through the internet, with the 25-34 age group being the most active in this category.
