British households are expected to spend €115 (£97.60) each on consumer electronics this Christmas, making it the most popular gift category.
According to a survey by the Centre for Retail Research commissioned by price comparison site Kelkoo, UK families are set to spend the most overall this Christmas compared to other Western and Northern European countries – an average of €756.44 (£642.24) per household.
The next biggest spenders, the Swedes, will spend over €100 less, at €637.31 (£541.10). The thriftiest shoppers are in Italy, where households are forecast to pay out €563.50 (£478.43) each.
The CRR report predicts European household spending this Christmas across the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.
Brits will spend the most on consumer electronics, as well as €83.68 (£71.04) per family on toys.
Online sales this festive season are expected to rise by 25.1 per cent to €32 billion (£27.16 billion) across Europe, with UK households again being the highest spenders – buying an average of €166.24 (£141.09) worth of goods via the web.
