Price comparison site uSwitch has claimed that the price of broadband internet access in the UK has fallen by 36 per cent in the last four years.ZDnet reports that in 2004 consumers could expect to pay around £27 per month for a 512kb connection – now the average price has fallen to £17 per month and the average speed has climbed to anything up to 8mb.
The best deal to be found at the moment is said to be Plusnet’s £10 month package, whilst mobile operator Orange was highlighted as being the most expensive at £20.
Virgin Media is leading the way when it comes to speed. Its current top deal offers 20mb, and this looks set to increase to a massive 50mb by the end of the year. Users of its 4mb service last week found out that they were to receive a free upgrade to 10mb by the middle of the year.
Around 15 million households currently subscribe to broadband services in the UK, spending between them around £3 billion a year.
