A survey of MPs has found that the majority support measures to bring costs under control to halt the decline of the High Street.
According to a poll conducted across all three main parties on behalf of the British Retail Consortium, two-thirds of MPs support a business rate freeze, while three quarters say costs must be controlled in order to stimulate growth.
The majority of MPs polled said they had noticed a deterioration in the High Streets of their constituencies and two thirds agreed with calls for a fairer and more predictable system for managing increases in business rates.
“A business rates freeze is essential to offer immediate relief, but there is much more still to be done if high streets are to go on providing jobs and services,” said the BRC’s director general Stephen Robertson.??
"If action isn’t taken the cost of that failure will be borne by communities across the country in the form of more boarded up premises and an acceleration of the downward spiral that’s gripping too many town centres."
