Toshiba announced a new 2.5-inch ‘self-encrypting hard drive’ equipped with what the firm describes as Wipe Technology.
The new MK6461GSYG family of 7,200rpm 2.5-inch SATA hard drives provide a range of options for the firm’s AES-256 bit encrypted Wipe Technology to avoid sensitive data falling into the wrong hands.
Whole disks or parts of the disk can be configured for the Wipe Technology to invalidate the data on a number of conditions such as when the drive is connected to an unauthorized host system, when instructed by the host system (decomissioning), or even on power-down.
The drives are likely to appeal to a number of users, such as government and corporate laptops, which could tie the data wiping functions of the drive to other security measures such as Intel’s Anti Theft 3.0 system.
Toshiba also cited a nuber of other applications that could benefit from the additional data security such as multifunction printers and embedded point-of-sale systems.
The series will be available in a range of capacities from 160GB to 640GB with mass production to begin by the end of June.
It’s unclear at this stage if the drives will give users the customary 30 second warning before self-destructing.
