Toshiba is to begin offering Blu-ray as an option on its laptops later this year.
The vendor had been the main backer of rival high definition media format HD-DVD, but pulled out earlier this year when it became apparent Blu-ray had gained an unbeatable foothold.
It said in a short statement that it had applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association – the standards authority for the format – and expected to begin shipping its first Blu-ray enabled products at the end of this year.
"In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA," a spokesperson for Toshiba said.
