Social networking service Twitter has released the firm’s 2010 ‘Trends on Twitter’ report which it generated from an astonishing 25 billion tweets sent throughout the year.
“Twitter Trends are automatically generated by an algorithm that attempts to identify topics that are being talked about more right now than they were previously,” the company posted on the Twitter blog.
“The Trends list is designed to help people discover the 'most breaking' breaking news from across the world, in real-time. The Trends list captures the hottest emerging topics, not just what’s most popular.”
The top 10 list in Technology were: Apple iPad, Google Android, Apple iOS, Apple iPhone, Call of Duty Black Ops, New Twitter, HTC, RockMelt, MacBook Air and Google Instant.
The results are an illustration of just how good a year Apple had with four out of the top ten trending technology tweets relating to the iPad, iPhone, iOS and MacBook.
Google may also be pleased with two entries in the top ten, including Android at number two. Not bad for a smartphone OS that was virtually nowhere this time last year.
If there's any doubt that Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has graduated to the big brand level then surely 7th highest trending topic of 2010 has settled the argument.
