HMV falls to fifth place as Tesco moves up to the number two spot.

Top ten UK entertainment retailers listed

HMV has lost its place as the UK’s second biggest entertainment retailer to Tesco, says retail analysts Kantar Worldpanel.

HMV has dropped to fifth spot behind Asda and iTunes, after Tesco improved its DVD and Blu-ray sales. Amazon is still number one for music, games and movies, reports MCV.

The number of HMV shoppers have also almost halved over the last 12 weeks. HMV’s market share for the 12 weeks ending June 9th was 8.2 per cent, down from 16.8 per cent during the same period last year. This is largely down to the company’s fall into administration and mass store closures.

“HMV’s recent store closures have hit the high street retailer hard, with its number of shoppers almost halving in the latest 12 weeks compared with the same quarter last year and its market share dropping by 8.4 percentage points," said Kantar’s insight director Fiona Keenan. “Amazon has benefitted the most from HMV’s decline, gaining across music, games and video."

The top ten UK entertainment retailers in terms of market share are as follows:

Amazon – 23.4%
Tesco – 13.2%
iTunes – 11.3%
Asda – 10.5%
HMV – 8.4%
Sainsbury’s – 8.2%
GAME – 4.4%
Morrisons – 3.7%
Play – 2.6%
Other – 14.3%
