British is a nation of news obsessed smartphone users, accessing news on mobile devices far more often than the European average, according to a new report from digital metrics outfit ComScore.
46.8 per cent of smartphone users in the UK accessed news sites in January versus the EU5 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK) average of 37 per cent. The survey counted access to news sites either via mobile browsers or dedicated apps.
“Today’s mobile consumer wants to be plugged into what’s happening around them every second of the day, and their smartphones are enabling them to do that," said ComScore mobile chief Hesham Al-Jehani.
Al-Jehani said that the growing popularity of news consumption on mobile devices brought with it challenges for publishers to deliver content via the small screen.
While nearly half of UK smartphone users accessing news on their phone sounds impressive, that figure relates to those who access news at least once during the month. Those that hooked in almost daily, the figure was 15.8 per cent, still high for the EU5 average of 11.8 per cent.
Brit smartphone owners also topped social networking use on mobiles, sending text messages and using a web browser.
