Tesco has launched a software-based Virtual DVD player that can play downloaded movies through the users PC or Mac.
Based on Microsoft’s Silverlight, Virtual DVD plays downloaded content and initially will feature some Warner Brothers movies, such as Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and The Hangover.
Tesco is currently offering a bonus Virtual DVD to customers when they purchase a physical DVD in-store.
“Tesco is excited to be the first retailer to launch this next-generation movie experience,” said Tesco’s category director for entertainment, Rob Salter.
“By partnering with Warner Bros, we tap into its experience as an innovator in the migration of physical formats to digital experiences, and offer our customers a new way of watching two of the biggest movies of 2009.”
