Tech Market Snapshot: Global PC shipments declined in Q4 2015, SSDs to outperform HDDs in 2016

We roundup the latest news from IT analysts and firms to see which tech categories have been doing well, which haven’t, and what’s forecast to be big next year.

According to a Spiceworks Voice of IT survey commissioned by Crucial, SSDs will gain popularity in 2016, with 76 per cent of IT decision-makers looking to use SSDs in their organisations.

The survey asked IT experts about data storage trends in 2016 and the type of drives IT departments are using. Overall, HDDs were the most commonly used storage drive, with a 91 per cent adoption rate within organisations. SSDs, which showed the biggest rise in growth (or market adoption), had an existing user base of 58 per cent in 2015, with a further 18 per cent of IT managers planning to deploy the technology in the next 12 months.

Gartner has revealed that worldwide PC shipments declined 8.3 per cent in Q4 2015, with a 16 per cent decline in EMEA.

“The fourth quarter of 2015 marked the fifth consecutive quarter of worldwide PC shipment decline,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

“Holiday sales did not boost the overall PC shipments, hinting at changes to consumers’ PC purchase behaviour. On the business side, Windows 10 generally received positive reviews, but as expected, Windows 10 migration was minor in the fourth quarter as many organisations were just starting their testing period.”

Gartner has also reported that worldwide combined shipments of PCs, ultramobiles and mobiles phones are expected to reach 2.4 billion units in 2016, a 1.9 per cent increase from 2015.

New data from Juniper Research shows that fitness wearables will remain the primary wearable device, with smartwatches being less commonly used, for the next three years.

However, the firm believes fitness wearables will be used by approximately 110 million people worldwide by the end of 2019, while smartwatches will have more than 130 million users.
