Sony's CEO, Howard Stringer, has admitted that the battle between his company's high definition format, Blu-ray, and its competitor, HD DVD, has reached a stalemate.Speaking at the 92nd Street Y cultural festival center in New York, Stringer said that it is: "a difficult fight," before going on to say that Toshiba's aggressive pricing strategy and Universal's announcement that it would be supporting rival HD DVD exclusively, had been two things that had knocked his company's confidence in the past few months.
"We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides," Stringer said. When questioned how important it was for Sony to win the format war, he commented that it was mostly a matter of prestige, alluding that Sony would be prepared to produce HD DVD players should it 'beat' Blu-ray.
