Steve Ballmer to retire as Microsoft CEO

Microsoft has today announced that CEO Steve Ballmer will retire from his position within a year.

The company’s board has already appointed a special committee to find a replacement CEO.

"We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction," said Ballmer.

Bill Gates is one of the members of the committee, which will work with leading executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles International to consider both external and internal candidates.

“As a member of the succession planning committee, I’ll work closely with the other members of the board to identify a great new CEO,” said Gates. “We’re fortunate to have Steve in his role until the new CEO assumes these duties.”

Ballmer has been CEO of Microsoft since January 2000, taking over the position from Bill Gates.
