Music streaming service Spotify has launched an app platform, inviting other companies to develop music based apps that work with and within the software.
Spotify Platform, as it’s called, has 13 launch partners, with apps from Billboard, Fuse, The Guardian, Last.fm, Moodagent, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Songkick, Soundrop, TuneWiki and We Are Hunted.
Top10 and ShareMyPlaylists apps are coming soon.
At the launch, Spotify boss Daniel Ek said it was a ‘game changer’: "Once you take a look, you’ll see why we believe this is truly the beginning of something game-changing for digital music. We think this will lead to integrations that keep Spotify beautiful and simple, but layer in great musical experiences designed to be social and fun. It’s what our users have been asking us for."
The firm went on to boast of recent surges in under sign ups – claiming it has taken on seven million users since in two months, following partnered with Facebook. Its users have apparently created over 500 million playlists, a figure which has doubled since July.
Spotify, which offers unlimited streaming of a large music libraray for £10 a month, has been credited with offering a legitimate and attractive alternative to music piracy, which for years has been the bane of the music industry.
