The increasingly popular streaming music service Spotify could soon be available as an iPhone and iPod Touch App, in a move that could transform the way consumers use Apple’s touchscreen music players.
Executives from Spotify’s Swedish headquarters have submitted the application to Apple's iTunes App Store for its approval.
The service itself is widely seen as a direct competitor to both physical CDs and iTunes downloads as it seamlessly streams the majority of unobscure music – for free – from many devices that have internet access.
The iPhone could indeed be the next device to do so.
According to a BBC report, the Spotify App is designed to search for new music and can allow users to temporarily store playlists to their phone for use when there is no connection.
Spotify claims that the App is free – likely to come with a trial – though continued use comes at a £9.99 monthly subscription charge.
The music streaming service is currently free with adverts playing between tracks, while a monthly fee allows the ads to be removed.
Of the two million UK-based users having signed up to the service since 2008, a significantly small percentage pay to remove adverts.
