Sony has introduced the world's first OLED (organic light emitting diode) TV available at retail, which has an anorexically thin 3mm display.
The device will cost approximately $1,744 USD (£850). The 11-inch XEL-1 ill go on sale on December 1st in Japan only.
The device in its entirety weighs in at 2 kilograms and measures 287x253x140mm. It features include a super sharp 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a low 45W power consumption, which according to Sony means a 40 per cent reduction in power output than conventional LCD monitors.
Initially Sony will produce only 2,000 units per month, although it did no elaborate upon the reasons behind the low production run. Its LCD TV business sells over 10 million units per year.
Toshiba has also announced that it plans to put OLED TVs into production soon and hopes units will begin shipping in 2009.
