Sony finally kills off MiniDisc players

Sony MiniDisc players have finally reached the end of the production line, with the last devices set to ship in March.

Back in September, Sony revealed that it would be halting the production of the disc-loading music players, which have managed to survive for 20 years.

Back in 1992 Sony released its first ever MiniDisc player, the MZ1 (pictured), however MiniDisc and player sales began to rapidly decrease around 2000 due to the introduction of MP3 players, most notably Apple’s iPod.

If you happen to be a MiniDisc enthusiast, fear not. Japanese newspaper Asahi reports that tech company Onkyo will continue to make similar hardware.
