Sony Ericsson has announced the Xperia arc smartphone with an extra wide 4.2-inch ‘Reality Display’ with what the firm describes as a Mobile Bravia Engine.
The Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ powered Xpera arc is also equipped the Exmor R for mobile camera sensor with an f/2.4 lens with 2.4x zoom which the firm said enables the capture of high quality, bright pictures and HD videos even in low light.
Internals wise, the Xperia arc is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon system on chip processor and comes with an 8GB micro SD card.
Following other manufacturers such as LG and Nvidia, the new Sony Ericsson smartphone is also equipped with a HDMI connector to allow viewing pictures and watching videos in high definition on a full-sized television.
The stand out features of the Xperia arc appear to be the slight change in screen aspect ratio which should make typing a little less cramp in portrait mode and the smartphone’s 8.1 megapixel camera with a decent lens is also a cut above the rest.
Sony chose to sprinkle unfamiliar marketing terms around the Xperia arc display, calling it a ‘Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine’ but didn’t shed any details on what that might be. Likely it relates to a high quality IPS LCD display.
Physically the Xperia arc has a curved rear which presumably explains the name but it stops short of the curved glass on the front of the Samsung-made Google Nexus S.
The Xperia is scheduled for a worldwide release ‘from Q1’ and will be available in midnight blue and misty silver colour schemes.
