Sony announced a range of new Cyber-shot compact cameras which it claims are the first that can capture panoramic shots in 3D.
The new Cyber-shot cameras don't have two sensors, as one might expect of a 3D camera, but rather capture several images as the photographer moves the camera position themselves. Unfortunately it's necessary to use a Sony Bravia 3D TV set and the company's 3D shutter classes to view the images.
The Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 is a full body style compact with a 24mm wide angle lens feature 5X optical zoom. The panoramic sweep mode allows the photographer to simply hold the shutter button while panning across a scene to result in automatic image combining.
The Cyber-shot DSC-TX9 is a super-slim model with an integrated lens zoom assembly, 25mm wide angle with 4X zoom in this case. Both cameras feature the 1.2 megapixel "Exmor R" CMOS image sensor and are able to capture 1920 x 1080i AVCHD video recording too.
The lower end DSC-T99 shares the same slim chassis as the TX9 but is limited to capturing 720p video. When the cameras arrive in the US in September, they'll cost $300 for the WX5, $400 for the TX9 and $200 for the T99.
“Budding photographers can now capture stunning panoramic photos in realistic 3D, as well as shoot high-resolution movies and vivid images easily with cameras that make photography simple and effortless.” says Mr. Yosuke Aoki of the digital imaging division at Sony.
The arrive of 3D functionality into common devices such as compact cameras is a trend discussed further in the second part of PCR's State of 3D feature. Click here to read more.
