The PC market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa saw slower growth than forecast over the Christmas period, as laptop and desktop sales struggled in the face of demand for tablets and cautious enterprise spending.
During the fourth quarter, quarterly shipments grew by 2.4 per cent year-on-year, falling short of the predicted 4.3 per cent. However, strong performance in the first half of the year saw total yearly growth of 12.8 per cent, with over 100 million PCs shipped over the course of 2010.
“The hype around media tablets ramped up towards Christmas, as expected, and despite the launch of Samsung Galaxy and Toshiba Folio, Apple continued to dominate the European retail with the iPad,” said Eszter Morvay, research manager at IDC’s EMEA Personal Computing Group.
