Skype has apologised for the extensive downtime the voice over IP service has experienced and is set to offer vouchers for paying customers inconvenienced.
triking a rather more apologetic tone than the initial offhand statements the company made to the millions of affected customers, Skype CEO Tony Bates said “we’re planning to offer Skype Credit vouchers to all of our loyal paying customers to thank you for your continued support.”
Bates said that Skype had 16.5 million people online and this was about 80 per cent of what the firm would expect to see, suggesting that millions were still without service.
“We’ve stabilised Skype’s core functionality – IM, audio and video – but it will take longer for us to restore offline IM and group video calling. It’s been a tough 24 hours for many of you – and I’d like to thank you for your patience as we bring Skype back to normal.
