Sky launches Sky Go for Android, sort of

Broadcasting giant Sky has launched the Sky Go application for Android on a limited range of high-end Android smartphones.

Sky Go enables watching stations such as Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living and Sky Arts 1 although only a very few handsets have been deemed capable of running the Sky Go application. The handsets include the HTC Desire S and Samsung Galaxy S2.

"We are always working to ensure that Sky customers have more ways to watch content they love, whether it's the big Premiership game, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Modern Family or Ruth Jones' Stella, and this is exactly what this enhanced version of Sky Go delivers," said Sky Go boss Holly Knill.

The Sky Go app is now available in the Android Marketplace although many users have found out that the app will only run if running the official firmware. Users who have rooted phones can only view Sky News while those that run unofficial Ice Cream Sandwich updates are out of luck.

So far the app has been greeted with mixed reviews, averaging 3 stars out of 5 although the user ratings breakdown shows this is neatly polarised between 188 awarding the app 5 stars and 206 giving the app a single star thumbs down.
