Sky announces 3DTV channel

BSkyB has announced plans to launch its 3D television service next year to coincide with the arrival of 3D televisions into the UK channel.

The new channel, which will run off the broadcaster's existing SkyHD platform, will offer a selection of movies, entertainment and sport. It is expected that the service will drive sales of 3D televisions, much in the same way that Sky's and rival Virgin's services currently do with high definition.

"Next year we will make our HD boxes work even harder for customers by launching Europe's first 3D TV channel," said Sky's Customer Group managing director Brian Sullivan.

"3D is a genuinely 'seeing is believing' experience, making TV come to life as never before. Just like the launch of digital, Sky+ and HD, this is latest step in our commitment to innovating for customers."
