Gartner figures have shown that the global server market grew in the last quarter, with shipments increasing by 14.2 per cent to 2.2 million and revenue growing by 15.3 per cent to $12.29 billion (£7.9 billion).
According to the research, the best performers were the x86 systems, which saw revenue growth of 29.5 per cent, while revenue from RISC and Itanium-based servers fell by 9.5 per cent year-on-year.
With the exception of Oracle, all major server vendors increased their revenue too. HP performed best with a 32.6 per cent market share, followed by Dell with 22.9 per cent share. IBM was in third place, followed by Fujitsu and NEC.
“The third quarter produced some solid year-over-year growth globally in both shipments and vendor revenue,” said Gartner’s research vice president, Jeffrey Hewitt. “All regions showed growth in both shipments and vendor revenue save one. The Middle East and Africa fell 2.9 percent in vendor revenue in spite of shipment growth of 4.2 percent for the quarter.”
