Speech recognition firm Nuance Communications may be purchased by Samsung.
Nuance, which provided the technology behind Apple’s Siri software, has reportedly been in talks with the Galaxy smartphone vendor regarding a sale, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Samsung is said to one of several companies bidding to acquire Nuance, with private equity firms also reported to be interested.
While the talks are said to have been held in the recent past, whether such discussions are ongoing, and what they may result in, is currently unclear.
As well as Siri, Nuance also provides the Dragon NaturallySpeaking dictation software products.
The company was most recently been valued at around $5.5 billion (£3.24bn).
If purchased by Samsung, the move could lead the smartphone maker to compete more directly with Apple and Microsoft, who have developed the Siri and Cortana voice recognition features for their handsets respectively.
