Samsung have launched the S2 external 2.5-inch hard drive equipped with high speed USB 3.0 interface.
The USB 3.0 interface allows for maximum transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second compared to the 480 megabits of the older USB 2.0 standard. The drives will come in 320GB and 640GB sizes.
The S2 range are the first native USB 3.0 external drives to arrive on the market. As such there's no internal standards bridge allowing the S2 to be smaller than anything previously seen while offering the full performance benefits of the new speedy interface.
The diminutive 2.5-inch drives are also fitted with 7,200RPM rotation speed disks. Samsung also said that the firm's Dynamic Balancing technology would "increase drive stability" and SilentSeek and NoiseGuard features keep the noise to a minimum.
Samsung are bundling preloaded software such as SecretZone and SafetyKey for encryption and the Samsung Auto Backup application. With netbooks arriving on the market with native USB 3.0 slots, the market in external storage is likely to be considerable given the new interface will present far less performance limitations than external drives did in the past.
Samsung didn't release pricing but the drives are expected to arrive in Europe imminently.
