Sales fall for first time in two years

Sales fall for first time in two years Retailers saw a decline in sales for the first time in two years following an abysmal Easter trading period.

According to the figures released today by the BRC, sales fell by 1.6 per cent despite widespread expectations that the early Easter holiday season would boost like-for-like sales during the month.

Commenting on the fall in sales, the BRC's director general Stephen Robertson said: "Here is the strongest evidence yet that customers are making serious economies and are increasingly concerned about the future.

"It is further proof that trading is extremely tough, but retailers are fighting back by keeping prices low and delivering extra value," he added.
