Sainsburys' non-food operation sees strong growth

Sainsburys' non-food operation sees strong growth The chief executive of Sainsbury's, Justin King has praised the performance of its non-food section, adding that it still has "significant growth potential".

Total sales for the UK's third largest supermarket during the fourth quarter were up six per cent on the same time last year, with the retailer seeing sales of £2.7 billion during the period.

"The fourth quarter contained a number of seasonal events as well as our own initiatives and we were pleased with our operational performance which helped us deliver good growth during these periods," said King (pictured).

Speaking about the performance of its non-food operation, which recently gained the services of senior Next manager Claire Sollis, King added: "We continue to see strong growth from non-food sales following the investment we've made in developing the range, establishing the supporting infrastructure and increasing the space dedicated to this part of our offer.

"Going forward, non-food has significant growth potential as we continue to implement our plans."

Sainsbury's has previously said that it intends to ramp up its commitment to non-food.

The company will announce its full year results in May.
