Sainsbury's and HP are set to drive home the message of PC recycling this weekend, after they announced they would be hosting an event at the supermarket's Nine Elms branch in London this weekend.Customers arriving between 11am and 4pm will be able to bring in their unwanted PCs, Macs, fax machines, scanners and printers for collection by specialist refurbishment company Maxitech.biz.
Any refurbished PCs and IT equipment will be given to charity, while the equipment that can't be reused will be recycled at a specialised plant owned by HP to avoid the need to send it to landfill.
"HP has been involved in the recycling and refurbishment of IT equipment for a number of years and is delighted to be working with Sainsbury's to make the process more convenient for their customers whilst reducing their environmental footprint at the same time," said HP's environmental manager, Bruno Zago. "HP hopes that this event will be the first of a series of events in the UK."
His comments were echoed by Sainbury's environmental affairs manager, Alison Austin: "This is a great opportunity for our customers to recycle any unwanted IT equipment conveniently, especially if they've used the summer holiday to have a good clear out.
"Instead of having to drive out of their way to recycle, they can drop their old equipment at the Vauxhall store before their weekly shop," Austin continued. "This saves time and helps the environment, and we're expecting to see some real IT relics from the past come to the store.
"It will be interesting to see who brings the oldest or largest computer, especially if they come on a London bus," she added.
