A Sage employee has been arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of fraud.
The suspect, a 32-year-old female, is thought to have attempted to defraud the software vendor by attempting to gain access to the details of 280 British customers, using an internal login.
The suspect was later released on bail pending a full investigation.
Sage has admitted that it is unable to confirm whether or not any data had been stolen, but that an attempt was certainly made.
The arrest that was made a few days ago, with Sage acknowledging that there had been a breach of sensitive customer information, but that the breach was not thought to have originated from an external hacking attempt.
Sage told The Register: "We believe there has been some unauthorised access using an internal login to the data of a small number of our UK customers, so we are working closely with the authorities to investigate the situation."
High profile hacking cases such as Sony’s back in 2014, which resulted in an estimated 47,000 documents stolen and leaked demonstrated how sophisticated hacking attempts have become.
Sage boats 6.2 million global customers, many of which are SMBs and SMEs who use its software. For these businesses and Sage, this fraudulent attempt will certainly force Sage to reassess the type of security that is used to protect customer data, regardless of where the threat comes from.
