Adventure game MMO to include huge raft of Jubilee content on June 2nd

Runescape to host virtual Jubilee street party

Free-to-play MMO Runescape is aiming to host the world’s largest virtual street party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend.

The game’s developer, Cambridge-based Jagex, says players will enjoy a feast of British classics from cream teas to steak and kidney pies in the virtual world of Runescape.com.

There will be new Jubilee content in the game as well, from corgis to royal souvenirs and a Jubillee golden carriage – drawn by four unicorns for that touch of realism.

The street party takes place on June 2nd in Runescape, at the royal city of Varrock.

A look at some of the snazzy Jubilee artwork you might expect to see on the day:

Only last year the firm was honoured by the Queen when it received the Queen’s Award for Innovation in Enterprise in April 2011, for the development, innovation and success of Runescape, alongside the propriety technology that powers it.

“The Jagex team and I were incredibly honoured last year when we were recognised for our continued success over the past decade by receiving the Queen’s Award for Excellence,” commented Mark Gerhard, Jagex CEO. “We thought it was only appropriate to return our appreciation and admiration by immortalising the Queen’s monumental 60-year achievement by providing an online platform for hundreds of millions of people around the world to come together. Friends and family will share in the fun and celebrations of this very special day celebrating her Diamond Jubilee, hosting what may be the first, but certainly will be the world’s largest, virtual street party. Everyone is invited, especially her Majesty.”

He continued: “RuneScape is quintessentially a British medieval adventure and we’re proud of our British roots as a continuing source of inspiration.”
