High demand and component shortages conspire to constrain unit supplies

Retailers face laptop shortage

According to a report in the Taiwan Economic News today, Dell and several other laptop manufacturers are having trouble meeting demand due to a combination of strong sales of consumer focused notebooks and a lack of components.

The report states that Dell in particular is putting pressure ODMs (original design manufacturers) such as Quanta to increase production. However, many ODMs are struggling with finding components.

Batteries and RAM are amongst the hardest to source parts, partly thanks to the continuing problems with faultly Sony fuel cells and the recent power failure that took out six RAM production lines at a Samsung factory.

According to the report, HP, Acer, Wistron and Compal are all also having problems with production and sourcing.
