San Diego-based semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company Qualcomm has announced that it will provide next generation Snapdragon processors to power Windows 10 PCs.
At Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Engineering Community event, the company announced that the processors will enable mobile, power efficient, always-connected cellular PC devices, and will support full compatibility with the Windows 10 ecosystem.
Cristiano Amon, executive vice president at Qualcomm and president of QCT, said: “Qualcomm Snapdragon processors offer one of the world’s most advanced mobile computing features, including Gigabit LTE connectivity, advanced multimedia support, machine learning and superior hardware security features, all while supporting thin, fan-less designs and long battery life.
"With compatibility with the Windows 10 ecosystem, the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform is expected to support mobility to cloud computing, and redefine how people will use their compute devices."
Qualcomm has decided to make this shift to PCs as traditional PC computing becomes more mobile. The vendor has seen its processors in a large portion of the world’s smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S7, and hopes to address consumer’s growing need to be always on and always connected. The company says that Snapdragon can be designed to support Windows 10 PCs to combine the best of computing and productivity with the cutting edge consumer electronics technologies available in today’s leading smartphones.
Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Windows and Devices Group at Microsoft shared enthusiasm for this partnership with Qualcomm, and said: “We are excited to bring Windows 10 to the ARM ecosystem with Qualcomm Technologies.
