Qualcomm says more than 30 mobile internet devices are in development based on its Snapdragon chipsets.Snapdragon technology is based around a 1GHz processor core, a DSP and 3G connectivity. Qualcomm says it will be used in a new generation of Pocketable Computing Devices (PCDs) and Mobile Computing Devices (MCDs).
These sit somewhere between smartphones and netbooks and are more commonly knows as Mobile Internet Devices (MIDS).
Qualcomm is currently battling it out with TI (OMAP) for control of the MIDS markets at the chipset level.
The company says fifteen OEMs and ODMs are using Snapdragon, including Acer, ASUS, C-motech, Compal, Foxconn International Holdings, HTC, Inventec, LG, Quanta Computer, Samsung, Toshiba and Wistron.
The first Snapdragon-powered devices are expected to be launched in the first half of next year.
Luis Pineda, SVP of marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, said: “Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon to encourage the industry to think outside the box and design devices that fill the niche between the portable communications capabilities of mobile handsets and the computing capabilities of laptops. Many of the customers we are now working with are new to Qualcomm and are looking to Snapdragon to help them succeed in the mobile space.”
