OEM quotes for 8x slim-type DVD burners have been dropped by ten per cent by Hitachi-LG Data Storage and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology. The burners, which were quoted at $30 in the fourth quarter of 2007, have now been dropped to $27, according to industry sources cited by the Chinese-language Economic Daily News newspaper. This price drop could force some smaller Japanese makers out of competition, leaving the likes of Quanta Storage, Lite-On IT, HLDS and TSST.
The impact this price drop could have on retail is still to be determined.
