Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Acer and Asus, all intend to launch high definition optical disc drives in 2008. However, sources talking to Taiwanese website Digitimes, indicate that these vendors are faced with the dilemma over which format to adopt.Despite a large market potential, competition between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is still under way, and it’s proving hard to predict a winner (if any). Because of the variety of formats, PC vendors are finding it difficult to decide which will incur the least market risk.
The source also added that demand for blue-ray laser optical drives has risen in the fourth quarter and that, with prices continuing to fall, this is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
