PC industry set for strong growth in 2008

PC industry set for strong growth in 2008 Industry commentators are predicting a period of robust growth in 2008, citing the impending release of service pack one for Vista, the increasing penetration of DirectX10 and the approaching launch of AMD and Intel's new chipsets.

Speaking to Digitimes, sources in the Taiwanese PC industry said that they had previously expected Vista to drive sales but a lack of compelling software and support had caused apathy to spread, stalling the uptake of the new Microsoft operating system.

It said that Microsoft's decision to continue sales of XP for a further six months had also helped sales, due mainly to continued objection to Vista by both consumers and manufacturers.

Echoing comments made by Dell CEO, Michael Dell at the recent Gartner ITxpo Symposium, the sources said, however, that the release of service pack would be the primary impetus for businesses and consumers to being mass-migration onto the new OS.

The sources also indicated that they believe DirectX10 will likely drive sales of new hardware and Vista.
