79% of North American game devs say that eSports is a ‘sustainable business’

PC gaming attracts more developers than consoles do

More developers are being drawn towards creating games for PC and mobile than for consoles such as the PS4 and Xbox One.

In fact, 56 per cent of developers said that their current game will be released on PC, with 50 per cent opting for mobile and tablet, compared to 26 per cent working on a PlayStation 4 game, and 22 per cent Xbox One.

The State of the Industry study from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) also found that 79 per cent of game developers reckoned that eSports was a sustainable business, with over one in ten saying that they are in the process of making an eSport title.

One developer that took part in the study said: “Creating a game as an eSport causes it to become a hobby and an interest outside the act of playing.

“This increased engagement is one way of allowing a game to become part of a player’s life in ways that don’t require them to always be investing their time into playing it.”

Regarding where the money is being made from the games industry, it was found that 29 per cent of developers make the majority of their profit from direct and digital sales to consumers, and 21 per cent said that it was micro-transactions (in-app, in-game purchases) that delivered the most income.
