Japanese electronics giant Panasonic is set to introduce a high-end water resistant Android smartphone called the Eluga.
Just 7.8mm thick and weighing in at a bulimic 103gr, the oddly named Eluga is crammed with high-end smartphone specs including a dual core TI OMAP 4430 processor and a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 OLED display.
Panasonic's European head of mobile Toshiya Matsumura apparently believes that the company can make up for a late entry into the market: "Despite the unprecedented increase in the number of smartphone devices appearing over the last few years, we don’t believe anyone has yet managed to truly bridge the gap between style and substance."
The Eluga is destined to arrive in Europe some time in April although strangely it'll ship with the increasingly crusty Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 with a promised ICS upgrade in 'the summer'.
We might suggest that by April, trying to flog an Android handset with an old Android pre-installed is going to be increasingly difficult, water resistant to 1M or not.
Still, it's good to see the Japanese firms bringing their high-tech know-how to smartphone area worldwide - something that's been sorely missing since Sony Ericsson's market share nose dived over the last few years.
There's no word on pricing but Matsumura said the Eluga would be "competitive".
