Palm reveals new smartphone

Palm has unveiled its new Pixi smartphone – designed as a lower budget alternative to the company’s Pre model.

The Pixi, which runs on the Palm webOS platform, has a full qwerty keyboard and a removable rubberised back cover. The phone supports a new Facebook application, and also aims to simplify communications by combining all IM and text conversations with the same person into one thread.

"With Palm webOS, we're creating a new, more intuitive smartphone experience defined by unmatched simplicity and usefulness," said Jon Rubinstein, Palm chairman and CEO. "Palm Pixi brings this unique experience to a broader range of people who want enhanced messaging and social networking in a design that lets them express their personal style."

The Pixi will be available some time before Christmas, with Palm set to reveal its range of customised covers at New York Fashion Week, which starts tomorrow. Full pricing information is yet to be released.

Two of Palm’s rivals are also set to unveil new products this week – Apple’s annual Autumn preview is scheduled for this afternoon, while Motorola’s new Android-based smartphone is expected to be announced tomorrow.
