Palm Pre sells at least 50,000 units in first weekend

Sales of Palm’s new Pre smartphone have been estimated as being between 50,000 and 100,000 units in its first weekend.

The Wall Street Journal cites analyst Michael Nelson, who estimated 75,000 units sold, with 80 per cent of sales going to customers of the US phone network Sprint.

Although the sales fall short of the iPhone’s 150,000 units sold in the first weekend, the Pre’s lower sales have been attributed to limited supply.

“The handset delivers but limited supply is curbing early uptake," said UBS analyst Maynard Um. "Given the limited availability of the Pre at each store, we believe its impact on Sprint's post-paid trends will be muted in the second quarter.”
