Laura Barnes takes a look at the evolving IT industry

OPINION: Catch ’em all

Christmas is almost upon us, and while there’s been a lot of uncertainty throughout the year as to the state of the PC market, a number of recent reports have actually been positive about technology spending.

It’s quite easy to look at the likes of Gartner’s report on the PC market and be dismayed by the fact that PC shipments in the UK were down 21.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2013 compared to last year.

But remember, just like a Poke?mon, the IT industry is evolving.

While we may all be familiar with Pikachu’s fluffy yellow existence, evolve him into Raichu and BLAM, you’ve got a Pokemon capable to storing 100,000 volts of electricity in its body. It’s hard work getting there, but it’s worth it, right?

Take a look at IDC’s recent report on tech spending and you’ll find that it is set to reach $2.04 trillion worldwide. So, where’s the increase coming from? The continued strength in mobile devices, says IDC.

The increased focus on mobile tech throughout the year is being heard loud and clear my many indie retailers. In PCR’s own research, we found that almost half of UK tech retailers are confident sales will be up this Christmas, with many citing tablets, tech toys and games consoles as the reason behind their positive attitudes.

Indies like SimplyFixIt are making a point of shouting about the benefits of getting mobile device repairs done at indie repair stores, and with the abundance of new tablets released this year, many retailers, including this month’s Indie Profile – ColleyGate Computers, have actually started stocking new tablets due to an abundance of enquiries.

It’s great to see retailers casting their nets a little wider and catching all the customers they can this Christmas.
