Solid state storage specialist OCZ announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Indilinx, a chip design house focused on flash storage controllers.
Up to now OCZ has manufactured SSDs based on a number of controllers available on market, including those from Indilinx.
However but the acquisition will see the firm gain around 20 patents and access to proprietary technology for forthcoming OCZ products. Following the acquisition, South Korean Indilinx will continue to design and sell chips to SSD manufacturers.
Tech pundit Anand Lal Shimpi said that OCZ's move to acquire SSD controller technology was "the only way to ensure growth in the future."
"Ultimately to stick around in this business OCZ needs to be able to build its own controller and that's what the Indilinx acquisition is designed to allow," said Lal Shimpi.
"This transaction ... enhances our ability to capitalize on the worldwide demand for Solid State Drives," said OCZ chief Ryan Petersen in a release.
Under the agreement, OCZ will acquire Indilinx for $32 million of OCZ common stock.
