O2 halted the roll out of Android 2.2 updates for HTC Desire smartphones following reports of customers with crashed phones.
The company has been beset by a barrage of complaints from angry customers on the telco's forums with Desire owners complaining of 'bricked' phones that fail to progress past the O2 splash screen. The new 2.2 update adds features such as wireless tethering and Adobe Flash support.
O2 had earlier posted a twitter update regarding the pending Android update saying: "We're making sure that our 2.2 is fully ready before it's released - free of bugs etc. We never release until it's right."
Following the complaints the company halted over the air upgrades and posted on the forum: "While we check out these issues we're putting the 2.2 update on hold." One forum member claimed he was told by O2 that a new update would not be issued until the 30th of September.
The problems and delays with 2.2 updates have lead some owners in O2 forums to replace the operator specific ROM with a generic HTC 2.2 ROM via phone modification web site XDA Dev. Some have also restored formerly broken phones from the 2.2 update.
OS upgrades have continued to be an update for Android-based smartphones with customers crying out for the latest features. However with the extensive modification which operators perform to stock Android/vendor software, such updates require extensive testing precisely to avoid problems such as this.
